26 FebF*I*N*D – A Journey through past, present and future

F.I.N.D is an opportunity for people to explore and understand the culture of Tamil society from the North-Eeast of Sri Lanka in an interactive and conducive environment. In light of the continued focus on the armed conflict and the tragic humanitarian crisis, the opportunity to grasp and appreciate the fundamentals of Tamil identity and everyday way of life are rare. This event gives us a chance to “touch base” and explore these aspects within a social and historical context.
The event is also an opportunity for people to share their opinions on the situation faced by Tamils in our homeland and actively contribute ideas to shape future events held by TYO in order to raise awareness of the plight of Tamils attempting to re-build their lives amidst the aftermath of the armed conflict.

Rabble.ca – Canadian government releases last of Tamil refugees
Seventy-six Tamil refugees were immediately taken into custody when they were discovered off the coast of British Columbia in October 2009 under suspicion of membership in the Tamil Tigers. Their release raises questions about the treatment of people who come to Canada to seek asylum. We speak with Krisna Saravanmuttu of The Tamil Youth Organization.

13 MayTYO : Warns of bogus aid collection
This was sent to us by the Tamils Youth Organisation in Australia
An email has recently been circulated urging members of the community to donate clothing articles for distribution to the thousands of Tamil civilians being massacred in the Vanni region by the Government of Sri Lanka (GoSL). The donations will be used by the Sri Lankan military to clothe 170,000 people being forcibly held in government camps. Described as “5 star accommodation” by the GoSL, the first independent video footage inside these facilities verify continued claims by aid agencies that these are “concentration camps”, with stories of rape abuse and torture at the hands of government soldiers seeping through the walls of censorship.
This initiative has been set up by church organizations and members of the Diaspora who have been compelled to act as the suffering of our people intensifies at the hands of GoSL.
We urge each and every one of you to STOP forwarding this email.
Why?
• As international pressure increases on the GoSL, the regime has now begun exploiting the generosity of the Tamil diaspora, using our donations to provide food and clothes to prisoners of death whist diverting millions in foreign aid to re-establish an economy on the brink of recession and re-arm a military adamant on the elimination of the entire Tamil race.
• By participating in this campaign, we are shifting the obligation of care for these civilians to the Tamil diaspora, allowing the Government to use allocated foreign aid to prop up its economic and military regimes, as it did in the aftermath of 2004 tsunami.
• Each article of clothing donated helps perpetuate a Government lie that adequate care is being provided to thousands of Tamil civilians, whose fate now remains at the hands of an administration that has killed over 100,000 people, slaughtered for voicing their fundamental right to determine their own destinies.
• This campaign is also an attempt by the GoSL to help legitimise a parallel administration of Tamil representatives currently working against the aspirations of self determination as expressed by the mainstream Tamils.
• By supporting this initiative, we are inadvertently legitimising a proxy government organisation set up with the intention of undermining the consensus that the LTTE are sole representatives of the Tamil people and their aspirations for freedom.
The role of the global Tamil Diaspora has been integral throughout the history of our struggle for equality and freedom. By participating in this campaign however, our complicity in the slaughter of our own will become our lasting legacy and the blood of thousands will stain our conscience for an eternity.
Now, at this juncture in our people’s history, as the gears of ethnic cleansing push further into our homeland, we must remain vigilant in our efforts and not unknowingly become agents of GoSL lies and manipulation.
We must remain united in our ambitions and unwavering in our aspirations.

28 MarSydney Protest Press Release 27th March

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE on 27 March 2009
Tamil March for Freedom to shut down Sydney
Traffic is expected to come to a standstill on Saturday in Sydney’s CBD as thousands prepare to march in protest of the genocide of Tamil’s in Sri Lanka by state military forces and demand an independent Tamil homeland.
Police will shut down the busy Elizabeth Street artery as an expected 6000 protestors from across the nation take part in a “visual march” to condemn the killing of Thousands of Tamil civilians by the Sri lankan Government.
Event organisers have described the rally as a “graphical depiction of the horrors of ethnic cleansing through art”, combining elements of dance and theatre throughout the procession to depict the plight of thousands of Tamil civilians in the war torn nation.
“If we do not act now, an entire race of people will be terminated in a matter of months” urged Jana Sivaram, head of the organising committee Tamil Youth Organisation.
The protest comes only days after the Sri Lanka Government launched a scathing attack on aid agencies, charging prominent humanitarian groups Care International and Human Rights Watch with being part of a “vicious coalition” and masterminding an “abominable conspiracy” according to BBC news.
The ministry’s attack came in response to claims by Human Rights Watch “of civilians being killed and wounded daily in the no-fire zone, while the Sri Lankan government continues to deny the attacks”.
2683 Tamil civilians have been killed and 7,241 injured from 20th January to 7 March alone with the death toll doubling daily according to reports released by the United Nations.
Concern is mounting for a further 250,000 people trapped by advancing troops without food or medical aid, as the governments continue to block the delivery of essential aid to civilians in the conflict zone.
Protestors will gather at Martin Place at 11am before travelling to the steps of City Town Hall via Elizabeth Street and Park Street.
